Spill off Busan after capesize bulker holed by bunker tanker
South Korean authorities are battling a bunker spill off Busan after a capesize bulker and a bunker tanker collided at the weekend.

According to local reports the Liberian-flagged Captain Vangelis L. spilt 237 kilolitres of oil after it was holed by a bunker tanker it was taking fuel onboard from on Saturday. The 169,044 dwt, 2009-built, Captain Vangelis L is managed by Kyla Shipping.

A 20 by 30 cm hole in the hull of the bulker was sealed after about three hours.

The Korean authorities believe bad weather may have caused the incident.

“High waves are suspected to be the main cause of the accident. The sea was swelling with a wind speed of around 8 to 10 meters per second,” Busan Coast Guard chief Bae Jin-hwan was quoted as saying.
