Steel cut on first 'Yamalmax' ice-class LNG carrier

Steel cut on first 'Yamalmax' ice-class LNG carrier
A steel cutting ceremony has been held for the first ice-class LNG carrier that will serve the Yamal LNG project in Russia’s far north.

The prototype vessel was ordered by OAO Sovcomflot at Daewoo Shipbuilding Marine Engineering (DSME) and the steel cutting ceremony took place on 29 September. The ceremony was attended by representatives from Sovcomflot, the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS), Bureau Veritas (BV) and other guests.

The 172,600 cu m LNG carrier dubbed the Yamalmax will be Arc7 ice-class, with classification from RS. The vessel will be operated under long term charter to Sovcomflot and Yamal LNG.

The prototype vessel will be used for training the crews of Arctic LNG tankers and practicing navigation in the severe ice conditions of high-latitude Arctic seas.

Yamal LNG will be served by a total of 16 ice-class LNG carriers built at DSME. Earlier this year Teekay and China LNG placed orders for six of the vessels and Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) and China Shipping contracted for three LNG carriers.yamal steel cutting
