Highlighting the disparity between the nominal capacity of containerships and what they can actually carry the Mumbai Maersk has become the first vessel to ever carry 19,000 teu.

With President Donald Trump completing his first year in office his efforts have been focused on actualising ideas that were voiced during the arduous 2016 sprint to the White House.

The global containership fleet hit 21m teu of capacity this month, however, fleet growth has slowed according to Alphaliner.

DP World Limited handled 16.4mn teu across its global portfolio of container terminals in the first quarter of 2017, with gross container volumes growing by 5.7% year-on-year on a reported basis.

Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) reported a 10% increase revenues, and a 20% jump in volumes in the fourth quarter of 2016, but revenue per teu was down 8.2%.

Singamas Container Holdings turned to a $36.6m loss in the first half from a $10.1m profit previously as revenue plunged 42% to $410.3m from $704.0m in the previous corresponding period.

DP World has delayed bringing 1.5m teu of extra capacity on line at Jebel Ali’s terminal 3 and “slowed” the construction of its flagship port’s new $1.6bn terminal 4 due to what it describes as "quite clearly" a global economic slowdown.

The container shipping fleet could pass the 20m teu mark in capacity terms next month according to Bimco.

The Georgia Ports Authority, which recently reported a record-breaking 3.14m teu throughput in FY2014, has broken another record with an all-time high 293,889 teu moved at Savannah in July.

DP World handled consolidated volumes of 26m teu in 2013, a 3.8% decrease over the previous total of 27.1m in 2012, despite record volumes handled in the UAE.
