Tanjung Priok completes port upgrades
Jakarta: Indonesia's biggest seaport Tanjung Priok has completed upgrades to two major container terminals that will allow the handling of bigger ships and higher container throughput.

Tanjung Priok, operated by state-owned port operator Pelindo II, is now able to handle ships with capacity of 5,000 teu.

Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT) and Terminal Petikemas Koja (TPK) had both successfully harboured ships of 5,000 teu in capacity, according to Richard Lino, president director of Pelindo II.

“This is proof that Tanjung Priok port is ready to offer services of international standard and is truly prepared to become a regional port hub (to serve) a growing economy in Indonesia, Asia, as well as the rest of the world,” Lino said.

In the past 13 years, JICT has increased its container handling capacity to 2.4m teu from 1.5m teu. TPK is working towards 1m teu by the end of 2013 from 850,000 teu at present.
