Thailand seeks progress on Myanmar's deepsea port project
Bangkok: Thailand is pushing for progress on the development of a $8.6bn Dawei deepsea port in southern Myanmar to be built by a Thai construction firm.

The planned Dawei port and industrial estate will be linked to Thailand's Laem Chabang port via road, cutting transport time between central Thailand and Chennai port in India from six to three days by avoiding the Malacca Straits, according to Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, chief of National Economic and Social Development Board, Thailand's economic development think-tank.

“Shipping time between Thailand and India could be cut in half,” Termpittayapaisith said.

The mega project is to be built by Thailand's Italian-Thai Development Company, which won a 60-year concession to build and operate the port and industrial estate.

The Dawei project, however, is facing difficulty in securing financing.
