The two 150,000 dwt suezmaxes were named at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries on Thursday.
Dr Jeanette Chen, wife of Singapore’s Senior Minister of State for Transport and Health, Dr Lam Pin Min, was godmother to the first vessel named, the Marlin Singapore, while Michelle Lee, wife of Tan Chin Hwee, ceo Asia Pacific for Trafigura, was godmother to the second vessel named, the Marlin Siena.
The vessels are the first of 35 newbuildings comprising MR and LR2 product tankers and suezmaxes ordered by a financial partner of Trafigura which is then leasing the vessels. All the newbuildings will fly the Singapore flag.
“Trafigura is a leading player in global shipping,” said Trafigura's Tan. “We’re delighted that all the new vessels will be registered in Singapore, flying our nation’s flag as they transport commodities around the world.”
Minister Lam said: “My wife and I are honoured that the first of this fleet of new, technologically advanced vessels has been named after our country. We take this as a fitting tribute to Singapore’s role as a global hub for trading in commodities including oil and oil products, and as a centre of the global shipping industry.”
