The 2012-built Hong Kong-flagged 56,000 dwt supramax was reportedly carrying nickel ore from Indonesia to China when it capsized in heavy seas of up to 15 metres and winds in excess of 40 knots, local reports said.
The crew abandoned ship as it first started listing about 20 to 30 degrees to port before going beyond 90 degrees and capsizing, reports said.
All 21 mostly mainland Chinese crew were rescued. Two helicopter teams dispatched from Hong Kong rescued 19 crew while a vessel from mainland China picked up the remaining two.
