The newbuildings, scheduled to be deilvered between 2014 to 2016, will be built at Japan-based Imabari Shipbuilding Group.
Singapore-listed Uni-Asia said it is negotiating with potential charterers to secure charter contracts for the three vessels, and will finalise financing options with third party financial institutions.
“The current downturn in the shipping industry provides us with the opportunity to invest in, and build our fleet of vessels in anticipation of the recovery in the shipping markets,” said Kazuhiko Yoshida, chairman and ceo of Uni-Asia.
“Apart from providing a stable income stream through charter contracts, these vessels may potentially provide capital gains for the group,” he said.
With the addition of the three new vessels, Uni-Asia will own a total of eight handysize bulk carriers.
