Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has tested using an underwater drone for a hull inspection rather than using divers.

The remote operated subsea vehicle (subsea ROV) was used inspect the submerged hull areas of an MOL cable laying vessel.

Such inspections are normally carried out by divers but can be affected by weather and sea conditions, and potentially longer lead times and higher costs.

“The demonstration test clearly showed the viability of checking for faults and damage to submerged outboard equipment and determining the status of damage to the ship bottom using a subsea ROV,” MOL said.
