MSC first announced its intention to make developments at Deurganck in 2013, after Antwerp’s Delwaide dock approached full capacity in 2013, reaching 4.6m teu, and the locks there proved too small to accommodate the new 16,000 and 18,000 teu vessels that the carrier and its P3 partners will be introducing in the near future.
Following the request, the board at directors at Antwerp Port Authority issued an invitation for expressions of interest, in the interest of equal treatment. It has since been concluded that “no alternatives of similar importance are proposed,” a company statement read.
Feasibility discussions are now underway between the Antwerp management committee and MSC.
