Arctech begins construction of Sovcomflot icebreaker series
Arctech Helsinki Shipyard has carried out the keel-laying ceremony for the first of a series of four multipurpose icebreakers being built for Sovcomflot, classed by Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS).

The multipurpose icebreakers are being designed for use on the Sakhalin-2 project, where they will perform supply vessel duties as well as being able to carry out emergency evacuation and oil spill response in Arctic climate conditions. The 3,000 dwt vessels will measure 100 m in length by 21 m in breadth with maximum draught of 7.6 m, and will carry DYNPOS-2 Anti Ice ECO Winterization (-35) class notation.

Attendees at the the keel-laying ceremony included Evgeniy Ambrosov, senior evp of Sovcomflot; Esko Mustamäki, md of Arctech Helsinki Shipyard, Albert Chernyshov, director of the RS Branch in Finland; and representatives of Sakhalin Energy oil and gas company and JSC United Shipbuilding Corporation.

It has been a busy month for Arctech Helsinki Shipyard, a specialist in arctic shipbuilding technology that is now 100% Russian owned. On December 11 it named the new Finnish icebreaker Polaris, which will have diesel/LNG dual fuel propulsion and also be equipped for oil recovery and emergency towing.

A week later it delivered Baltic icebreaker newbuilding Murmansk to Vyborg Shipyard, for onward delivery to client Rosmorport later this month. Vyborg carried out basic design of the vessel – the second in a series of three - and purchasing of major components, while Arctech was responsible for the construction, outfitting and testing of the Finnish icebreaker.
