Bernhard Schulte chooses Wärtsilä for 11 ballast water retrofits
Wärtsilä has won a major contract to retrofit ballast water management (BWM) systems to 11 Bernhard Schulte boxships ranging from 2,600 to 5,600 teu.

One of the largest retrofit contracts ever made due to the complexity of installing a BWM system on existing tonnage, the contract is the first portion of a total 38 Bernhard Schulte ship retrofits to be undertaken over the next five years.

Starting this year, delivery of the Wärtsilä systems is slated for completion in 2017. The move follows the successful implementation of BWMS on various Berhard Schulte newbuildings delivered since 2012, as well as two successful retrofits on older vessels.

"This significant order is a clear indication that the major ship owners are actively securing procurement for quality BWMS in anticipation of ratification of the IMO's ballast water treaty,” said Joe Thomas, director of ballast water management systems at Wärtsilä Marine Solutions. “Wärtsilä has both experience and deep know-how in this field, and can offer reliability and long term support to ensure that customers have the optimal solution for their specific needs.”
