Crew evacuated after fertiliser ship catches ablaze in North Sea
A fire has broken out on 1998-built Marshal-Islands-flagged, 33,700 dwt general cargo vessel Purple Beach, igniting its cargo of fertiliser and prompting evacuation of crew over fears it may explode.

The fire began in Purple Beach’s hold on Monday night, en route from Immingham, England, to the German port of Brake, and has continued to burn despite the efforts of firefighting teams and Purple Beach’s 22 crewmembers.

Still ablaze, the vessel is now 20 nm North of the German coast, and residents have been advised to keep windows shut to avoid the noxious fumes. While 36 have been admitted to hospital after inhaling the fumes from the burning cargo, German authorities have indicated they are not currently expecting lasting environmental damage.
