ESL Shipping said the energy-efficient 26,000-dwt vessel, named Haaga, is more eco-friendly than the current generation of vessels and emits 50% less carbon dioxide.
“Our wonderful shipping company investment is almost at the finish line,” said Aki Ojanen, ceo of Aspo Plc that owns the brand ESL Shipping.
“These next-generation vessels are helping our shipping company to reduce its carbon footprint and to improve its competitiveness and profitability,” said Ojanen, who is also chairman of the board of directors of ESL Shipping.
Haaga and its sister ship Viikki will start operating on the Baltic Sea during the first half of 2018.
Viikki, launched in August 2017, was the world’s first LNG-powered handysize bulker also built at Jinling Shipyard.
The construction project for both vessels is part of the Bothnia Bulk project, partly funded by the EU. The objective is to modernize the Sweden-Finland sea route between Lulea, Oxelosund and Raahe to be more eco-friendly. These vessels have been designed in Finland, and European equipment suppliers account for roughly 60% of the total value of the vessel investments.
In August this year, ESL Shipping signed an agreement with Skangas to procure LNG fuel for the two eco-friendly handysizes.
