Fire on Italian ferry leaves one dead, rescue efforts continue
A fire onboard an Italian ferry has left one dead and more than 280 people still onboard as rescue efforts continued, reports said.

The fire broke out on the lower deck of the Italian-flagged Norman Atlantic early yesterday in the northwest of Corfu, Greece.
 
Greek authorities said that one man had died among the 478 passengers and crew, while more than 280 people were still on board, waiting for helicopters to airlift them to safety. Bad weather, however, has hampered rescue efforts.
 
Italian coastguard said the fire on the ferry had been “tamed”and the ship was being stablised by cables attached to a tug amid rough seas and strong winds.
 
The Norman Atlantic, a 26,900-dwt ro-ro ferry, radioed for help when it was some 44 nautical miles northwest of of the island of Corfu. The ferry had been travelling from Patras in western Greece to the Italian city of Ancona.
