First LNG bunkering at Zeebrugge

First LNG bunkering at Zeebrugge
The first LNG tug, Borgøy, operated by Norway’s Buksér og Berging (BUBE) has become the first seagoing vessel to be bunkered at the Port of Zeebrugge.

The truck-to-ship transfer operation was performed by LNGEurope, which manages a number of similar LNG bunkering operations for inland barges at Rotterdam and Antwerp ports.

“These safe bunkering operations will become routine for a steadily growing fleet of LNG fuelled ships, not only in Zeebrugge,” said Koos Blaazer, head of LNGEurope.

“This bunkering operation is of the greatest importance to the Port of Zeebrugge,” said ceo Joachim Coens. “Firstly, we can be proud that BUBE has chosen Zeebrugge to perform this operation. Secondly, it is a confirmation of the time and effort we’ve invested in becoming a first mover in LNG bunkering.

“We’ve started up several projects with different parties which are all in very different stages of development. To see this project performed successfully is very gratifying.”

Zeebrugge signed an MoU for cooperation on LNG Bunkering with Port of Antwerp and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore in November.
