First UK dual-fuel newbuilds get Wärtsilä engines
Wärtsilä has inked a deal with Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) to supply propulsion for the UK’s first ever dual-fuelled newbuilds.

Constructed at Ferguson Marine Engineering in Glasgow, the two ro-ro passenger ferries, besides being the first dual-fuel vessels for CMAL, will also be the first ever dual-fuel ships to be built in the UK.

Slated to enter service during the second half of 2018, the ferries will operate on various routes along the west coast of Scotland.

Each vessel will be supplied ships will feature a twin screw mechanical propulsion driveline, driven by two 6-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF main engines capable of switching between LNG or conventional diesel fuels, two 6-cylinder Wärtsilä 20DF auxiliary engines, gearboxes and controllable pitch propeller systems (CPP) including the Wärtsilä Energopac optimised propulsion and manoeuvring system, tunnel thrusters, the Wärtsilä LNGPac storage and supply system.
