Fjordline and Liquiline to build Denmark's first LNG bunkering terminal

Fjordline and Liquiline to build Denmark's first LNG bunkering terminal
Norway's Liquiline is to build the first LNG bunkering terminal in Denmark for Fjord Line.

Fjordline has entered into a contract with Liquiline for it to design and build an LNG bunkering terminal at the port of Hirtshals. Fjordline berths at the port on a daily basis with one of its two cruise ferries Stavangerfjord and Bergensfjord, which trade between Denmark and Norway.

The terminal will have a 500 cu m storage tank and a bunkering capacity of up to 400 cu m of LNG per hour allowing Fjordline to complete LNG bunkering during the normal two hours they spend in port.

While the LNG bunkering facility is being built for Fjordline’s use it also sees potential commercial business for the terminal,

"Fjord Line is very much looking forward to have this LNG ship bunkering terminal from Liquiline established. It will enable us to bunker our ships quickly and give us the possibility to make use of this terminal commercially,” said Gert Balling, director of Fjord Line.

The terminal is due to be operational in the fourth quarter of 2014.

In June Fjord Line’s cruise ferry Bergensfjord suffered a leak during an LNG bunkering operation in Norway while carrying out a stability test at the same time as refueling from road side tankers.

The planned LNG bunkering terminal in Denmark adds to a slew of developments underway including in the Gulf of Mexico, the Port of Antwerp and Portsmouth.
