Denzil began his long career as a staff shipping journalist and freelance contributor to various Fleet Street papers, including the Financial Times, and later wrote articles for numerous maritime and insurance titles. For many years he also served as Insurance Editor of Seatrade magazine.
On the PR side, his company Denzil Stuart Associates represented a stellar list of clients including World-Wide Shipping, the Salvage Association, the American P&I Club, the Strike Club, tanker group NITC, AXA Corporate Solutions, BMT Marine & Offshore Surveys and many other maritime interests. He also held the double distinction of having been the first press officer of what at the time was the world’s biggest shipping group, P&O, and the first PR consultant of any maritime P&I Club (the UK).
He went on to become an authority in the marine insurance field, representing first the former Institute of London Underwriters, and then serving as consultant and press officer to the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) for the period 2004-2012.
He also represented law firms in the UK (including Ince & Co), Greece and the US, and was closely involved with the biennial maritime trade fair Posidonia, as well as with the initial launch of Seatrade as a company by his friend and close associate Themis Vokos in 1970.
Denzil travelled tirelessly until well into his 70s, and remained generous to a fault in entertaining friends and colleagues at a handful of London nightspots where he was a cherished customer.
Despite suffering poor health in the last few years, he continued to serve his client accounts with selfless attention, and closely followed the latest developments in the insurance and maritime sectors. Every article or press release he wrote was painstakingly accurate, insightful and elegantly turned.
Denzil Stuart was a colossus in the world of maritime journalism and PR, and will be dearly missed by all those who had the privilege to know him.
