ITF Seafarers Trust renews support for humanitarian response to piracy
The ITF Seafarers Trust has renewed its funding for the Maritime Piracy Humanitarian Response Programme (MPHRP) set up to 2011 to support seafarers in recovering from the trauma of pirate attacks.

The ITF Seafarers Trust three-year core funding of MPHRP was coming to end this month. It said it had decided to extend its core funding despite the drop off in Somali piracy incidents. However, the Trust believes it will need to refocus its work and also develop plans to become part of an existing charitable structure

“The MPHRP has done some good work for the benefit of seafarers and their families who have experienced considerable trauma,” said David Heindel, chair of the trustees of the ITF Seafarers’ Trust.

“While Seafarers’ Trust funding was for a finite three years, the trustees believe that the MRHRP deserves the opportunity to continue its good work despite the sharp reduction in piracy incidents since 2011.”
