LR stresses the importance of shipping to Greece as a country
Classification society Lloyd's Register (LR) is among those who believe Greece and the Greeks do not really understand and appreciate what the shipping industry has to offer the country.

Within the shipping sector, the role of LR in assuring the welfare of the Greek fleet is well known and now the has taken on the role of broadcasting to the wider public in Greece and abroad the importance of Piraeus and the Greek fleet.

Recently, the UK class society hosted a media luncheon on Piraeus waterfront’s Akti Miaouli during which it unveiled a new management structure for Greece, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Adriatic, while identifying the region as one of its key growth centres in the years to come.

It also revealed plans to make young Greeks more aware of Greece’s shipping industry. Indeed, the society launched a programme of secondary school visits, speaking to students about shipping and what it has to offer.

"We are visiting schools and explaining the shipping industry and what it can mean to Greece," said Theodosis Stamatellos, LR's recently appointed manager for Greece, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Adriatic.

He emphasised the importance of Greece and the region to LR's thinking. “Our aim is to treat this area as one country, going forward,” he said. “We want our people in all countries to have more active contact with clients." He said this means making "our people more visible, you can’t be isolated in the office".

“Size is not the only thing,” Stamatellos noted. “It is important to have clients with aspirations, who are determined to do quality work, expand and maintain LR standards.”

Hosted by Nick Brown, manager Global Marine Communications Business Development & Innovation, and Stamatellos, the Piraeus-based team covers Monaco, Italy, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Cyprus, Israel and Greece was introduced. Brown, noted shipowners in the area control more than 11,000 vessels -- around one-fifth of the world fleet.
