Construction of the CRTs will begin immediately, with hulls of the vessels being built by German shipyard Theodor Buschmann in Hamburg and final outfitting carried out by Damen Maaskant Shipyards in Stellendam, the Netherlands. Delivery of the Bureau Veritas-classed vessels is scheduled for first-quarter 2017.
With overall length of 32mtr, the RAVE (Robert Allan Voith Escort) design vessels will be powered by two Voith thruster units and two ABC main engines, combining the precision and power vital for escort towing as well as for working in confined harbour and channel areas.
The Robert Allan-designed Carrousel towing system comprises a towing point attached freely rotating ring fitted around the superstructure of the tug, enabling the tug to turn around freely relative to the tow without letting go of the line and preventing capsize by the tow load.
The Novatug CRT will, for the first time, “eliminate what has always been the most significant threat to safety in towing – the risk of capsizing under a tow load,” claims Multraship md Leendert Muller, adding that “the benefits in terms of efficiency and flexibility… are also enormous.”
Meanwhile, Multraship has also agreed a deal with Damen for a new state-of-the-art ASD 3212 tug as part of what it says is planned fleet expansion to keep pace with increasing demand for its specialist services.
