NLI unveils large-volume LNG Bunkering concept

NLI unveils large-volume LNG Bunkering concept
NLI solutions has revealed a new design for a large-volume LNG Bunker Barge, capable of holding up to 4000 cu m of LNG.

The concept, co-designed by NLI, Rolls-Royce and Wilhelmsen Technical Solutions, will be used for at-sea ship-to-ship LNG bunkering, which has emerged as a stopgap measure for the fuelling of emerging LNG-powered ships, while ports upgrade their facilities and infrastructure.

The design features an atmospheric, prismatic steel ‘type B’ tank, with 4000cu m LNG capacity – compared with today’s largest capacity of 187cu m. Researchers have concluded that re-condensation equipment would be too inefficient, so excess boil-off gas will be delivered to shore-based gas grids between operations. For propulsion, the vessel features Azipods similar to those used on OSVs.
