Oldendorff opts for Erma First ballast water treatment system

Oldendorff Carriers has opted for Erma First's ballast water treatment system (BWTS) to meet the upcoming IMO Convention and US regulations.

Oldendorff chose the Erma First BWTS after a length after a lengthy review of equipment in the market, including manufacturer visits and included; regulation compliance, capital cost, energy requirements, anticipated operating costs, space requirements, simplicity to manage and availability.

The Emra First system has US Coast Guard (USCG) type approval and International Maritime Organization (IMO) approval for nearly all water types.

Niklas Richter, project manager of the Oldendorff Carriers Green Ships Department explained, “We have had an internal task force working on BWTS for two years, during this time we have thoroughly investigated many systems, particularly those with US Coast Guard approval. We were very impressed with the professionalism of Erma First and are very pleased to partner with them on the BWTS project.”

The shipowner plans to fit its first trial system in July this year and start installing them on owned vessels next year.

Oldendorff Carriers represents another major deal for the Greek ballast water systems manufacturer inked a deal last November to install its Erma First BWTS on all 38 ships in the Safe Bulkers fleet.

Erma First was established in 2009 by a team of specialists in waste and water treatment. The company describes its BWTS technology as a simple solution suitable for all types and sizes of vessels, using 40 µm filtration followed by efficient full flow electrolysis.
