Rotterdam port first half throughput dips, earnings fall
The port of Rotterdam’s container throughput fell by 2.3% year-on-year in the first six months of 2016, the port authority said as it announced reduced profit during the period.

The Rotterdam port authority said that given the current difficult macro-economic circumstances, the port business community is performing well compared to companies in competing ports.

The port also handled 3% less cargo in the first six months with the most pronounced decrease observed in the dry bulk segment, down 9.9%.

Net profit for the first half was recorded at EUR96.6m ($106.5m), down from EUR122.5m in the same period of 2015.

Revenue in the first six months came up to EUR336.9m, a EUR2m decrease compared to the previous corresponding period.

“Over the next few years, two developments will be particularly relevant to the port: the energy transition and digitisation,” the port authority stated.

The port is favourably positioned to make major strides in both areas. Over the past six months, the Port of Rotterdam Authority has taken a number of concrete steps in the field of energy transition and digitisation.”
