Rotterdam port launches low carbon fuels incentive scheme

The port authority is inviting shippers, shipping companies, fuel manufacturers and suppliers, engine makers and service providers to participate in the scheme.

“We wish to play an active part in the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions generated by the shipping sector. Through this scheme, we are able to give various parties just that extra financial push they need to realise a concrete project in this area,” said Allard Castelein, ceo of Port of Rotterdam Authority.

Through this scheme, the port authority will contribute to the realisation of climate policy targets in the Netherlands and worldwide. The incentive scheme runs until the end of 2022.

The scheme is intended for fuel projects that reduce CO2 emissions by over 50%.In cases where the proposed project involves biofuels, these need to be of an advanced nature and be produced from residual flows and waste flows.

The port authority pointed out that the alternative fuel project needs to directly involve parties within the relevant transport chain and the applicants intend to actually use a qualified alternative fuel for the propulsion of a seagoing vessel.

The alternative fuel also needs to be bunkered within the port of Rotterdam.

The total funds of EUR5m will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis.
