Rotterdam sees calls from 3 megaships in 'week of the giants'
The Port of Rotterdam is seeing calls from the world's largest containership, bulker and oil tanker today, in what the port has dubbed the “week of the giants”.

The much written about 18,000 teu Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller the largest container vessel in the world will be calling, having made its maiden voyage from Asia to Europe. Meanwhile the world's largest tanker currently in service the 420,000 dwt ULCC Ti Europe will also be calling the port. The port's bulk terminals, not to be outdone, will be handling one of Brazilian miner Vale's massive VLOCs the 402,347 dwt Vale Rio de Janeiro.

The vessels are accommodated by the Eurogeul access channel, dredged to a depth of 25 m, enough to make room for all three vessels. In most places, the port is 23 m deep.  When fully loaded, the Vale Rio de Janeiro has a draught of 23 m and the Ti Europe some 24.5 m.

The port called attention to the massive size increases in recent years: “In 2006, the first container ship with a capacity of more than 10,000teu arrived; in 2011, 362 of such container ships called at the port. Last year, this number had already risen to 487.”
