Taking advantage of a window of good weather, it is hoped the survey will answer some questions around the sudden foundering of the vessel and why no alarm was raised by its crew.
The Cemfjord capsized on 2 January in poor weather while travelling through the Pentland Firth off Scotland and is now on the sea bed at a depth of around 70 m. All eight crew are missing and presumed dead.
The ROV's mission will be made difficult by strong currents, which necessitate an ROV of such size that it will be unable to enter the wreck.
