SHI to build biggest wind-installation vessel

SHI to build biggest wind-installation vessel
UK-based Seajacks International has placed an order with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) to create the largest offshore wind-farm installation vessel in the world.

Seajacks Scylla, the fifth self-propelled jack-up to join the Seajacks fleet, will be based on the Gusto MSC NG14000X design, featuring a 1500t leg-encircling crane, 5000cu mtr of deck space, and over 8000t of variable load. The vessel’s 105m legs will have the ability to perform operations in depths of up to 65m.

“Seajacks Scylla is a significant milestone for Seajacks and for the offshore wind industry,” said Blair Ainslie, ceo of the Seajacks Group. “…the design of Seajacks Scylla has been developed to meet the installation needs of jumbo-monopiles, jackets and turbines of future wind farms in deeper waters and further from shore. We are delighted to be working with a top tier shipbuilder in SHI, and are confident that Scylla will be of the highest quality and certain that she will be delivered on time for the commencement of UK Round 3.”

Over the winter, Seajacks reached a significant milestone with the on-time installation of 80 monopiles at the Meerwind Offshore Wind Park, in spite of significantly worse weather than anticipated. As part of its role as Main Installation Contractor at the German site, Seajacks is responsible for the installation of all turbines and foundations, as well as the scour installation, grouting and noise mitigation for the project.
