Being held in a cruise terminal participants were greeted by gale force winds and waves crashing into the shore next the terminal. It was certainly a fitting allegory for the challenges that were noted by the opening speakers.
“Still shipping is facing rough seas and many challenges,” commented Koji Sekimizu, IMO secretary-general at the opening.
The forum as with last year has a somewhat unusual quirky format and within a few minutes of starting some of the world’s top shipping executives were trying to tear a paper cut out of an elephant with a piece of paper held behind their backs. This was to represent the elephant in the room, in most cases a very modern art or cubist interpretation of an elephant it must be said.
And should the stormy seas ahead be making delegates feel a bit seasick there were jelly babies and other sweets on hand to help settle your stomach.
