Shipping group Wilhelmsen and equipment manufacturer Kongsberg are setting up the world's first autonomous shipping company which is designed to offer the entire value chain for unmanned vessels.

Almost two-thirds (64%) of global marine industry executives believe there is uncertainty surrounding liability issues relating to unmanned ships should a vessel be involved in an incident as a result of a cyber attack, according to a new report from Clyde & Co and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST).

With a growing buzz around autonomous or automated vessels Lloyd’s Register (LR) has launched an unmanned marine systems (UMS) code.

The UK's Automated Ships and Norway's Kongsberg Maritime have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to build what they claim is the world's first unmanned and fully-automated vessel for offshore operations.
