Representatives from a dozen shipping companies said to include “some of the world’s largest” negotiated the basis for the new Alliance, which will be a coalition of shipping owners and operators who share a common interest in robust enforcement of maritime sulphur regulation. The grouping is now expected to be formally launched “within a couple of weeks,” at which time the identity of all founder members will be announced
In advance of the meeting, the initiative received high-level support from the EU's Commissioner for Climate Action, Connie Hedegaard, along with the Danish Minister for the Environment, Kirsten Brosbøl.
Supporters of the initiative point out that in recent years significant steps have been taken to implement regulations to limit sulphur emissions from shipping, involving considerable costs for responsible companies that comply. Lax enforcement of the tighter new regulations will therefore not only fail to produce intended benefits for the environment and human health but also give intentionally non-compliant shipping companies an unfair competitive advantage.
