Video: Bulk carrier crashes into mansion on the Bosphorus

A Maltese-flagged panamax bulker ploughed into a historic mansion on the shores of the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul at the weekend.

The 74,269 dwt, 2001-built Vitaspirit crashed into the 18th centuryHekimbasi Salih Efendi Mansion on Saturday after its steering gear failed. Despite videos showing extensive damage to the house, which is used a restaurant. Nobody was reported to be injured in the accident despite extensive damage to the building.

The bulker, managed by Vita Management in Greece, was reportedly towed to safety after the collision.

The Bosphorus Strait, one the world’s most crowded shipping lanes, was reported to be closed to navigation briefly following the incident.
