Scope of supply from Visedo will include the ferry’s ultra-quiet electric propulsion system, reducing the ferry’s noise level over a diesel engine. The system will also reduce the water disturbance behind the vessel by between 60 and 70%, allowing it to navigate “EU Natura areas” with delicate marine life. The largest of its type, the 50 m vessel can carry up to 25 cars and 147 passengers.
Running off a 4.2 MWh lithium-ion battery system made by Swiss company and strategic partner Leclanché, Visedo calculates that replacing conventional fossil-fuel-based propulsion with its own system will reduce annual CO2 and NOx emissions by 2,000 tons and 41,500 kg, respectively. The company’s system was chosen over a similar offering by Siemens, the previous candidate for the delivery.
“This new contract, along with several recently won marine projects, like the Damen Eco-Liner project in The Netherlands, gives further validation of Visedo’s strong execution of its business plan,” said Visedo ceo Kimmo Rauma. “Thanks to our technology allowing the most efficient and compact systems available, Visedo is winning ground-breaking projects in the marine market. The orders secured in 2015 mark a significant break-through for Visedo in terms of deploying its growth plan & strategy.”
The possibility of a battery-powered future shipping was one which emerged at last week’s Nor-Shipping show, which was shot-through with references to Tesla Motors, a US manufacturer of battery-powered cars.
