The last few days have seen a remarkable amount of coverage of shipping the mainstream media, including the first call in Europe by the world's largest containership the CSCL Globe at the port of Felixstowe.

When your editor shared a BBC report on the arrival of the vessel on his perosnal Facebook page it was perhaps inevitable that a friend who is a former port executive would take more interest in it than most. The eagle-eyed viewer spotted something that most would not - the spreader on a container being unloaded from the CSCL Globe is only locked on one side - as screenshots below show. The orginal BBC report can viewed here

Since publishing this story a number of readers have pointed out the observation by the former port executive was inaccuate and that what is seen raised in the video in the waterside flipper which acts as a guide, and that the container was locked by the twist locks, and there are systems to ensure the container cannot be lifted if the twistlocks are not in place.
