A second next-generation fuel efficient ropax was floated from China’s Avic Weihai Shipyard on Monday.

Stena Edda, Stena’s E-Flexer ropaxes, is scheduled to start operating the Liverpool Belfast line in 2020.

The E-Flex concept is described as a new generation of ropax vessels focusing on energy efficiency and flexibility, using energy efficient solutions by WE Tech Solutions.

In Power Take Out (PTO) mode, the propulsion machinery operates in combinator/variable speed mode, while the shaft generator provides the vessel’s electric network with considerable electrical power that results in variable speed and optimised efficiency of the main engine.

The power distribution solution utilises the common DC-link to distribute power efficiently and economically. The solution also enables controlled short circuit currents, which allows lighter switchboards in marine installations.

Stena Edda, with capacity for 120 cars and 1,000 people, is a sister vessel to Stena Estrid which was floated on 16 January 2019.
