“It was a tight three-year deadline, and we are very proud to stand here with this milestone met ahead of schedule so that we can move seamlessly into the next stages of the port modernisation project”. The completed work consists of 600 m of new quay, and marks one step in a series of planned upgrades to the 17ha concession site, which will include roadway construction, yard paving, new offices and gates, as well as cargo handling technology to increase capacity and efficiency.
“With hard work, determination and perseverance, I am proud to announce that the reconstruction of the wharf at the Freeport of Monrovia has been completed,” said Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, at a ceremony where she dedicated the newly completed quay. “I am proud to say we have found a partner in APM Terminals.”
As part of a 25-year agreement signed in 2010, representing the first 100%-owned port concession for APM Terminals in Africa, which currently has interests in 11 port facilities in 10 African nations, APM plans to invest $120m at Monrovia over the 25-year concession period, as well as a further $25m beyond what is stipulated in the agreement.
