klinecape2
A K Line vessel serving its long term contract with Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) recently became the first fully-laden capesize bulker to call a GCC port.

The Cape Taweelah arrived loaded with bauxite arrived at Port Khalifa, UAE on 23 June from the port of Kamsar, Guinea.

The approaches to the terminal were deepened by Abu Dhabi Ports to 18.5 m and widened to 280 m from 250 m to accommodate loaded capesizes.

EGA began production at its new Al Taweelah Alumina refinery in April, which processes Bauxite ore into alumina, the feedstock for aluminium smelters.

In 2015 K Line entered into a long term contract with EGA to transport around 5m tonnes of bauxite ore for the new refinery.

Abdulla Kalban, managing director and ceo of EGA, said: “The arrival of Cape Taweelah is a landmark moment for EGA, but these huge ships will become a familiar sight at Khalifa Port over the years ahead.”

Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, ceo of Abu Dhabi Ports, said: Our investment in deepening and widening the channel has created better business opportunities for all partners, including CSP Abu Dhabi, which recently received one of the largest container vessels at Khalifa Port with a capacity of 21,000 teu.”
