The UAE port of Fujairah has made 0.5% low sulphur bunker fuel available this month, well ahead of the IMO 2020 global fuel sulphur cap.

The Port of Fujairah released a notice to mariners over the weekend that production and supply of the compliant fuel have begun in Fujairah, a major bunkering port.

“We are pleased to inform the vessels calling Fujairah Offshore Anchorage Area and Port of Fujairah that Fujairah Refining Limited has started manufacturing and production of the first bunker fuel oil 0.5% sulphur which is ready for delivering in Fujairah,” the notice stated, signed off by harbour master Capt. Tamer Masoud.

“That means the bunker fuel 0.5% sulphur is available in Fujairah as early as February 2019 onwards.”

From 1 January 2020 under IMO’s Marpol Annex VI regulation, all ocean-going ships will be required to burn bunker fuel with a maximum sulphur content of 0.5%, down from the current limit of 3.5%.
