New box service to link Abu Dhabi with India
Dubai: A consortium of shipping companies is to start direct service between Abu Dhabi’s Khalifa Port and the ports of Mundra and Mumbai's, Nhava Sheva on the west coast of India beginning end-February.

Orient Express Lines (OEL), Simatech and X-Press Feeders are to add a call at Khalifa Port Container Terminal (KPCT) to its existing weekly, fixed-day service, known as the “IGI” service, between the Arabian Peninsula and India.

The deepwater Khalifa Port, with initial capacity of 2.5m teu, went operational from September 1 last year and now handles all container shipments into and out of the emirate. Abu Dhabi Ports Company handled 787.048 teu in 2012, up 2.5% on 767,713 teu the previous year, and says it expects to reach the 1m teu mark this year.
