Oman new maritime law to be ready in 2019

Oman’s new maritime law should be passed within the next six months, Rashid bin Mohammed Al Kiyumi, director general, maritime affairs at the sultanate’s Ministry of Transport & Communications told the Seatrade Maritime Middle East Exhibition & Conference in Dubai on Wednesday.

The third draft of the law is currently with parliament awaiting approval, Al Kiyumi said.

Oman’s existing Maritime Law was issued in 1981.

Al Kiyumi said the new law would include regulations concerning management of the sector, ship registration, ship building and maritime transport, certification of seafarers, as well as a provision for the seizure of vessels in cases of abandonment.

The Seatrade Maritime Middle East Exhibition & Conference is part of UAE Maritime Week, which runs until 1 November.
