Total moves ahead with Sohar LNG bunkering project

SOHAR-Port-and-Freezone

French oil major Total has progressed with its plans to develop LNG bunkering service at Oman’s Sohar port following a project job awarded to McDermott on Monday.

McDermott has been awarded a contract by Total Oman E&P Development in partnership with Oman Oil Company to provide front-end engineering design (FEED) services for the Sohar LNG bunkering project.

The scope of work during the FEED phase includes defining the onshore mid-scale LNG facilities and preparing a competitive tender for the engineering, procurement, supply, construction and commissioning phase.

Work on the project will begin immediately, according to McDermott.

In May 2018, Total signed a memorandum of understanding with the Omani government to develop LNG resources in the country, and in the midst establish Oman as a regional LNG bunkering hub.

The global LNG bunkering market is entering a rapid growth period driven largely by the IMO legislation to limit sulphur emissions.

The use of the clean fuel LNG is seen as a viable option for ships to meet the IMO 2020 global fuel sulphur content cap of 0.5%.
