UASC boxship crippled in engine-room blast

UASC boxship crippled in engine-room blast
United Arab Shipping Company’s (UASC) boxship ASIR suffered an engine room explosion, resulting in injuries to three of its officers, while sailing from Suez to Jeddah.

The company said two of the injured crewmen have been taken to nearby medical facilities. The vessel, now reduced to emergency power and slowly drifting, is to be towed into port through contracts currently under negotiation. Efforts to restore power to the vessel are ongoing, while UASC vessel Jebel Ali provides standby assistance.

The company has indicated there is no damage to cargo nor any pollution on board the vessel or at sea, but that towage operations may take a number of days, after which cargo will be discharged at the port.

“UASC regrets the inconvenience caused to its customers and partners on account of the incident but is taking all steps to minimize the hardship to the extent possible,” a spokesperson said.
