Firefighting on Maersk Frankfurt continues into sixth day
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) continues to battle to extinguish the fire on board the Maersk-chartered container ship which killed one crew member.
The ICG posted on social media platform X that it was tackling sporadic fires in containers on the vessel.
A helicopter dropped 200 kg of dry powder onto the burning containers in an effort to extinguish the fire, which can be seen in a video posted below.
The coast guard said its efforts were being gradually augmented by the shipowner.
The Panama-flagged newbuilding chartered by Maersk suffered an explosion on 19 July resulting in a fire while sailing from Mundra to Colombo.
Maersk confirmed previously that one seafarer had died in the fire and the Panama Maritime Authority reported earlier in the week that ship manager said a body on the lashing bridge was impossible to reach due to the fire.
The cause of the fire remains unknown although has been linked in local press reports to a short circuit on the vessel.
The 2024-built Maersk Frankfurt is owned by Tokei Kaiun Ltd and managed by Bernard Schulte Shipmanagement.
