USCG permanently relieves Commanding Officer in cutter grounding
The Commanding Officer of a US Coast Guard (USCG) cutter James that ran aground in August has been permanently relieved of duty.
The USCG cutter James ran aground on 8 August causing damage to the vessel. No personnel were injured in the incident.
On 26 August Capt Marc Brandt, Commanding Officer of the cutter, was temporarily relieved from duty pending results of an investigation into the incident.
On Monday Capt Brandt was permanently relieved from duty as Commanding Officer by Vice Adm. Kevin Lunday, commander of Coast Guard Atlantic Area due to a loss of confidence in Brandt’s ability to command the cutter.
Capt. John Driscoll will remain temporary command of the cutter until a permanent Commanding Officer is assigned.
Brandt has been temporarily assigned to Coast Guard Atlantic Area.
