According to the letter of intent, Debo will produce around 200,000 tons green methanol annually, which is expected to commence commercial service in September 2024.

Jens Eskelund, China Chief Representative of Maersk said, large-scale supply of green methanol is crucial for us to realize the transition towards sustainable energy. China has a great potential in producing green methanol and we are looking forward to develop more collaborations with Chinese partners.

“It is an enormous progress for shipping industry to use green methanol as fuel. We are honored to work with Maersk to jointly promote the commercial operation of green methanol industry chain,” commented Zhang Shoujun, general manager of Debo.

In 2024, Maersk will introduce the first in a series of its large ocean-going container vessels capable of being operated on carbon neutral methanol built by Hyundai Heavy Industries.

Maersk has previously signed LoI’s with six companies - CIMC ENRIC, European Energy, Green Technology Bank, Orsted, Proman, and WasteFuel – for at least 730,000 tonnes of green methanol by 2025.
