CHEC to expand Evergreen terminal in Panama

CHEC to expand Evergreen terminal in Panama
China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) has been awarded the contract for the $66m expansion of the Evergreen’s Colon Container Terminal (CCT) in Panama.

Work began on 1 July to build 347 m of additional quay and a 8.5-hectare-container yard and should be completed in 23 months.

CHEC is working on several projects in Latin America, including a $220m expansion of the port of Manzanillo, Mexico, for ICTSI as well as a government contract in Costa Rica to expand 107 km of roads connecting to Moin port, according to CHEC’s Panama general manager Jianlin Liu. CHEC, which opened an office in Panama in 2002 is “making a comeback in the region in better conditions and with greater understanding of the market, with more experienced engineers,” explained Liu.

“There are lots of opportunities in the region and we want and are ready to participate in all the tenders that are on-coming,” he said.

The CCT expansion that will increase the Atlantic terminal capacity to 1.5m teu, includes doing reclaiming land works and dredging to a draught of 16 m.  “[The contract] is important for both CCT and CHEC because it will allow CCT to strengthen its position in Panama and for us, it is the first contract in 10-years since we participated in the first phase expansion of Hutchison’s Balboa terminal,” said Liu.
