“The Accord with the ADCI is a good start for defining how to move ahead our companies for good co-operation and trust. We can work together in the future and develop the next generation of salvers and commercial divers,” ASA president Jim Elliott told the one hundred Latin American companies represented in the audience.
The two-day event was organised by Lino Arosemena, chairman of the ASA’s Latin American Committee and General Manager of Talleres Industriales, a renowned Panama shipyard and coincided with Panama Chamber of Shipping’s Annual Maritime Conference “to provide an opportunity to build upon strategic alliances, highlight valuable synergies across the commercial diving and marine salvage communities, and to further develop relationships with government stakeholders who will require the assistance of our membership during maritime casualties and natural disasters, as well as remedial work in existing areas,” said Lino Arosemena.
ASA has signed a consulting accord with the Panama Canal Authority to provide Canal authorities with training and advice, said Elliott. “We are in a profession where we meet people in their worst days, and we are on call all the time,” as a reference to ship wrecks and maritime accidents.
Fortunately in the Latin American region, it is rare to see maritime disasters but there are opportunities for commercial and industrial diving of all kinds. Commercial divers are constantly on call to do underwater ship repairs.
The conference features roundtable discussions, presentations and networking opportunities for current and prospective members of ASA and ADCI, with its Latin America and the Caribbean chapter. Several specialists and class representatives addressed safety standards during diving and salvage operations, salvage operations in South America, new technologies and partnership and co-operation of salvers throughout the Americas.
