Five commercial vessels in search for 11 crew missing from sunken Bourbon Rhode

Five commercial vessels, the French Navy and a US aircraft are in involved in the search and rescue operation for 11 crew missing from the offshore vessel Bourbon Rhode which sank in Hurricane Lorenzo.

Three seafarers from the anchor handler owned by Bourbon were rescued from a lifeboat and it was confirmed that the vessel that began taking on water on Thursday had sunk.

Bourbon said that five commercial vessels had changed course to aid in the search and rescue. French Navy surveillance frigate Ventôse and Panther helicopter are set to join the operations today adding to a Falcon 50 from French Navy and as well as aircraft from the American National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The company said that a capsized fast rescue craft had been spotted on Saturday evening by an NHC aircraft and then the Falcon 50, commercial vessel was headed in its direction to try and recover it.

The Bourbon Rhode was in transit around 1,200 nm from Martinique and 60 nm from the category 4 hurricane Lorenzo on 26 September when it developed an ingress of water in the rear of the vessel.
