Greece tops global shipowning by value in 2014, US fastest growing
Greece remained the world’s largest shipowning nation by value of its fleet in 2014 according to VesselsValue.com, followed by Japan and China.

The value of the Greek fleet increased by 4.5% to $105.6bn compared to $101bn in 2013. VesselsValue.com said tankers formed the largest part of the fleet with a value of $41.6bn, followed by bulkers with a value of $35.5bn.

Japanese owners had the second largest fleet by value at $89.7bn, up 0.7% on the previous year. Bulkers formed the largest part of the fleet with a value of $40.9bn.

The third largest shipowning nation by value was China, which saw the value of its fleet decline by 2.6% to $70.8bn. Again bulkers were the largest portion of the fleet with a value of $31.6bn.

The fourth largest fleet was in Germany where the value declined 6.6% to $40.7bn, while fifth placed Singapore saw the value of its fleet increase a hefty 25.7% to $38.5bn. However, fastest growing was the sixth place US where the fleet jumped 48.4% to a value of $34.5bn.

VesselValues.com said the global fleet $680.4bn in total in 2014, a 3.2% increase over 2013.
